Talent Retention - Beware the New Year Resolutions

Many people take stock of their careers over the Christmas / New Year break. Once the New Year’s hangover clears, some of your team members will resolve to leave your organisation for greener pastures.

It’s been a challenging time of late and whilst many are positive about the coming year there are many who want job security or a new opportunity.  During the Christmas and New Year period people take time to sit back, enjoy a well-earned break and ponder the coming year.  But for some leaders and managers the New Year brings with it resignations from staff.

Many people take stock of their careers over the Christmas / New Year break.  Unfortunately, the reality is that if they haven’t started thinking now, then once the New Year’s hangover clears, some of your team members will resolve to leave your organisation for greener pastures.  Typically this will happen in the first quarter of the year.

So what can you do about it?  It’s simple . . . TALK WITH YOUR PEOPLE!  Get to know what they are thinking, have a half-year performance review and talk about careers, listen out for the throwaway lines and threats indicating someone is not happy, make them feel appreciated.  But whatever you do, don’t let your people go on holidays feeling like they would be better off and more valued elsewhere.  Some time invested now will save you time and money in replacing a valuable team member.
