This is the evidence for talent management

David Collings provides a strong argument that talent management is an important area of people practice, and that there is valuable research evidence that can help organisations manage it more effectively.

In "What's the evidence for talent management?" Rob Briner questions the value of talent management and describes it as 'just one of many slippery HR buzzwords that have wormed their way into our collective consciousness'. I wish to counter his view and argue that talent management is an important area of people practice, and that there is valuable research evidence that can help organisations manage it more effectively. Briner is correct – a key challenge that talent management faces is that there is no consistent approach. However, what is clear is that talent management is a key concern for leaders. It is widely identified as a metric that CEOs expect HR to deliver upon, but CEOs argue it is too important to be left to HR alone. So, regardless of academic critique of its merits, talent management is an organisational phenomena that matters to senior leaders.
